The Batter

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Imagine yourself as the 3rd and final batter in the bottom inning of the deciding game of the World Series. The score is tied. And the bases are loaded. And you are up against the pitcher. And oh yes, you have strike out twice….

Life can be like that. When all is stacked against you. And you are expecting the pitch.

Will it be a fastball? A fastball is easy enough to hit. Provided you are fast enough to hit it low and sweet. You know where to hit, but, it is just a question of you getting it there on time.

Will it be a curveball? A curveball is not that easy to hit. But then again, if you were not paying attention, it might curve away, or nearer to your sweet spot.

It is all up to the pitcher. But sometimes, the batter can influence the pitcher.

Pitching is like life. Life can throw your not so favourite curve ball, but who says you can’t influence the life to throw your favourite fastball? Of course there is the question of you hitting it sweet and low…..

For the home run…. and world series.

For your life, and your future.

Words

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

It’s easy for us to say something, but not doing it.

"I will call you back"
And forget to call back.

"I will look into it when I have the time"
And did not do so, and used the lack of time as an excuse.

"I’ll promise to weed out corruption"
And we are still looking at it.

In the end, words are just it. Words. It does not mean anything, unless you show it with action. But then again, even when you show it by action, people will not see it. Especially if one has been blinded, or influenced by others.

Words, and talk, are cheap.

He Will Have A Power That The Dark Lord Knows Not…..

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

It is already more than 36 hours.
I would say by now, most of HP fans who got their book yesterday should have finished or about to finish HP and The Deathly Hallows.

If you haven’t, don’t ready any further.

I remember reading one’s blog about Death, and how it should not come as a surprise. After all, the only things certain in life, are Death, and Taxes. And the effort Voldermort went to cheat death became a liability for him. After all, as he bid to set his seventh and final horcrux, he accidently marked Harry as his Horcrux. Killing Harry became a Catch-22 situation for Voldermort. He kill Harry, and 1/7 of his soul too dies…

And there were plenty of deaths too in this book. But, in the battle of Good versus Evil, there will be deaths and sufferings, for both sides. That’s the facts of life.

So, now, you know the ending. But I won’t spoil how it happened. You guys have read it. I am just gonna analyse it.

Each and every book in the Harry Potter series, reveal clues for the 7th Book. Why was Dumbledore so confident that Snape will protect Harry? That was the question asked by Harry in the first book. After all, didn’t Snape loath Harry and of course, his father, James? But Snape’s love for Lily Potter was the real reason why Snape watched over Harry. All the time. Watching back the movie Order of the Phoenix, the part where Snape taught Harry occlumency, on one side, you wonder if Snape enjoys reading Harry’s mind, and the other, Snape really really wanted to help Harry to the point of pressuring Harry to succeed.

I do admit, I had a soft spot for Snape. And some do know about my affinity for the Slytherins. After all, there is good in bad people, and bad in good people. But as I read through the chapter where Harry went through Snape’s final memories, I felt like I hit a jackpot. I have suspected that Dumbledore ordered Snape to kill him when the time is right. After all, Dumbledore was weak when the Death Eaters set upon Hogwarts. But Snape’s affection for Lily was the surprise for me. You do need to wonder why Dumbledore believed in Snape, and true enough, love was the answer. Something Dumbledore always told Harry about the magical power he possessed but not understood by the Dark Lord.

Reading through the pages of HP7, I do see the need for KISS, or rather Keep It Simple Stupid. Harry do not know much of advanced magic, while Voldermort traveled till the ends of the world to acquire knowledge on the Dark Magic. In the end, Voldermort on his arrogance, forgotten about the basic principles of Magic.

Voldie was resurrected on the blood of his enemy. But did not realise that by having a part of Harry, that allowed Harry’s wand an advantage where it knows how to counter whatever spells Voldie conjured. Voldie then seek for the Elder Wand, found it, but could not use the full power of the Elder Wand because he did not gain the rightful ownership of the wand. Voldie realised that, and killed Snape but did not realise that the person who disarmed the Elder Wand’s owner was actually Draco Malvoy. The wand has submitted itself to Draco and not Snape. Well, it’s kinda nice that the KISS principles still apply in the magic world, just like in programming. :)

Of course, there are many heroes apart from Harry. Hermione, excellent as always, to come up with many spells that saved Harry, Ron and of course, herself. Ron, being there where it matters the most. And how about Neville? He actually killed Nagini! It should not be a surprise, after all, Neville’s bravery has been acknowledged since the first book.

In the end, the Good overcome Evil. But there were a lot of casualties. Kids lost their one or both of their parents. Parents lost their kids. The Weasleys, they lost  Fred. As much as Mrs Weasley did not allow Ginny to fight alongside the Order, in the end, she has to give in, reluctantly. For that’s the only way Ginny can really grow up. Parents who trust whatever decision their children made, and love them nevertheless. Not disowning them, like what Sirius Black’s parents did.

And not being part of the wizard community have it advantages. Hermione and Harry have shown to the Goblins and Elves that even humans can be kind. And sometimes, a little kindness go a loooong way. Heck, even Kreacher helped Harry and the gang. Indeed, we do have to look beyond our prejudice, and sometimes we have to put ourselves on other people’s shoes…

Although it has been a Harry, Hermione and Ron’s adventure in this book. Many others joined in, within the book, and of course the whole of the muggle world. Especially those who queued up to get a copy of HP7. It has been a great adventure for me, from the day Harry was happy to get out of 4, Privet Drive into a whole new world at Hogwarts.

At the end of the day. Harry Potter, and Thomas Marvollo Riddle (or rather Voldie) are not different at all. Both are orphans not of their choice. Both have the same talents when Riddle accidently gave it to Harry. Heck, they even look alike. Well, if Harry did not wear his specs. But the exterior does not reveal what’s inside them. And that’s where they are different.

They do have a choice, they were shown the choices they can make. Riddle have the choice to be good as he was guided by Dumbledore. But he choose not to. Harry had the choice to walk away from the war. But he choose not to.

2 Years Ago - On Harry Potter

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Let us go back and review what I speculated 2 years ago….

I finished reading it on the night I got the book. But only now I am digesting slowly the bits and pieces of the 608 pages of J.K. Rowling’s puzzle pieces for Book Number 7.

Few questions crop up.

1. Snape murdered Dumbledore. Was he, has he, always been with Voldermort all these time? But now, I start to wonder, did Snape kill Dumbledore out of mercy? Dumbledore is weak to begin with after drinking the potion to retrieve the locket. Was it a mercy killing?

Like I said, there is more than meets the eye with Snape…

2. R.A.B. Who the heck is this guy? And he managed to retrieve the locket, one of Voldermort’s seven Horcruxes. Sirius Black is definitely not R.A.B. But, Regulus Black? It’s possible. And reading back Order of the Phoenix, it was mentioned of a locket that no one could open found in Grimmauld Place.

I speculated that RAB is Regulus Black, and I got this right too!

3. So, there are seven Horcruxes. One is in Voldermort. One is in the diary, which Harry has destroyed (yeay!). And one is Slytherin’s ring, which Dumbledore has destroyed. Since the locket was not found, there are still four Horcruxes that Harry has to find. One is the locket with Slytherin’s, something to do with Hufflepuff, and Ravenclas and Gryffindor. Except, well, Gryffindor’s object is safe in Hogwarts. Now there’s this tingling bit for me. I remember Trewlaney said in the prophecy that either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives. What if good old voldie accidently put his Horcrux in Harry? Oops.. hehe

Hehe, even this I got it right….the Horcrux in Harry part.

Ah well, another 2 years wait then….

2 years on, and I finally got the answers to my questions… :)

Thank you JK Rowling. It’s been a great 7 years of Harry Potter’s life…

Closure

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

Finally finished reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows…

My thoughts as I can’t tell much spoilers…

1. RAB turns out to be the very person I suspected it to be (refer to my previous HP posting about 2 years back).
2. Since we still have the Transformers fever, and it seemed apt, there’s more than meets the eyes on Snape. And yes, and even Dumbledore
3. You have to think out of the box. This also putting one’s feet on another person’s shoes, and overcoming the set prejudice and culture of a community.
4. Good, or rather God works in mysterious ways. In the words of Morpheus from Matrix, "I can show you the door, but you have to walk through the door". All fall into places for Harry, the right push, the right equipment, the right people, and he took it to his advantage…
5. What people perceive can be blown out of proportion. (Hint on Rita Skeeter’s expose on Albus Dumbledore). When the truth surfaced, man, was she out of line?

Overall, it a good and satisfactory ending to an interesting 7 years in the life of Harry Potter. In the words of Optimus Prime, "One shall stand, one shall fall"…..

Hapus Aku - Nidji

Kutuliskan kesedihan
Semua tak bisa kau ungkapkan
Dan kita kan bicara dengan hatiku

Buang semua puisi
Antara kita berdua
Kau bunuh dia sesuatu
Yang kusebut itu cinta

Yakinkan aku Tuhan
Dia bukan milikku
Biarkan waktu waktu
Hapus aku…

Sadarkan aku Tuhan
Dia bukan milikku
Biarkan waktu waktu
Hapus aku…

Going off a tangent

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

I read one of the most influential blogger post.

The blogger started with this:
"Petronas and CEO Hassan Merican was quoted as saying in Business Times Singapore (June 19, 2007): “If our appetite for refined petroleum products continues to grow by, say, at least 4 per cent a year, we will be a net importer by 2010.”

I read through the blogger entry, and sadly, he flew off on a tangent. Don’t believe me? I found this line "And to quote Petronas CEO, we may become a net importer of oil in three years’ time!"

The blogger and all his commentors went on harping on
primarily crude oil. Just for everyone’s knowledge, crude oil is not
the same as refined petroleum products. At our current consumption, we
won’t be an oil importer, but we might have to import refined petroleum
products. Products like gasoline, Jet A1, fuel oil and all. Reason
being? We do not have the refining capacity. We only have 5-6
refineries in Malaysia processing about 500,000 barrels per day. Unless
we build a new refinery, we will eventually have to import petroleum
products. This is what is happening in Iran.

Crude oil is only part of the equation. But refining crude oil to
turn it to products is where the money is. This is what we call
extending the value chain. If we are gonna import petroleum products,
we will lose out in the exchange rate as all what we produce will not
be exported. And yes, the money is on the products, not crude oil. You don’t just buy cotton straight from the fields right?

Lesson learned: A blogger needs to be more responsible and check his facts before he blogs. Especially if he can mislead others, intentionally or otherwise.

Autobots vs Decepticons

Friday, July 6th, 2007

Cool Transformers movie. Major coolness…

But alas, like any other Transformers movies, cartoon shows and all, the more advanced Decepticons will always lose out. I mean, the military jets versus a group of vehicles. And you notice that the Decepticons can fly while the Autobots (minus the Aerialbots) can’t fly?

And back then, I got more Decepticon toys cause they are much cooler. Yeah, Optimus Prime is supposed to be big, but when you get the toy, he’s rather small I must say. Compare it to Galvatron… woo hoo…

Anyway, back to the movie, when that helicopter dude Decepticon attacked the US air base in Qatar, I thought that helicopter dude was Vortex. I was wrong. And they call the tank Decepticon Devastator? Oh man, what happened to the Constructicons?

(for those of you who does not understand what I am talking about, forgive me, but you got to read Transformers 101 to really understand what I am talking about)

Apart from those hooboos, Transformers is entertaining, and of course, the good guys with team work wins in the end. A team whose members follow the leader out of respect will win in the end.

There will be a sequel after this though……perhaps the bad guys win this time to pave the way for a trilogy?

Why the fuss over Darfur?

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Yes, why the fuss over Darfur? When there are many genocides being done by the powers that be in other parts of the world. 2 million people died in Darfur in a war that has been going on for 20 years. 20 years, and only now we are hearing it.

4 million people died in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (or formerly known as Zaire) since 1998. 4 million died in just 10 years. And we do not hear about this. This is what I want you to know. We hear a lot about Darfur, but we do not hear about Congo. When I read about the killings in Congo, I was shocked. But then, I was not surprised. Why is Congo not mentioned? Why is Darfur is being mentioned, a lot? Probably the reason Darfur is being mentioned is because certain parties are not controlling the oil there. After all, that certain parties too know, that Congo is already theirs for the taking.

And we should feel guilty. As Congo is the home for 80 percent of coltan. What is coltan? Well once coltan is refined, it becomes tantalum. And tantalum is essential in the production of mobile phones. And this is the reason why people are being killed in Congo.

But I guess if you are nobody, and if the people who can spread the news have no vested interest, then the killing is justified. Genocide or collateral damage, people’s lives are lost.  Human lives are cheap, if you are not American or European.
